Gainesville's downtown is the symbolic heart of the city. A quintessentially quaint tight-knit gathering of shops, restaurants, theatres and parks it somehow pulls off always feeling lively, yet open and personal at the same time. By day, walk down tree-lined streets, draped lazily with Spanish moss. Take in the sounds of live music as it bounces off the buildings surrounding the Bo Diddley Community Plaza. Or meander through the stalls of vendors selling locally grown vegetables and fresh-baked pastries at the Union Street Farmer's Market at the same plaza every Wednesday.

By night, take in a play or movie at the Hippodrome State Theatre or browse the one-of-a-kind shops and fun boutiques around the Union Street Station Pedestrian Mall before sitting down to dinner at a mouth-watering restaurant featuring cuisines ranging from Cuban pastries to sushi. Just like downtown itself, there's something for everyone.

While visiting Downtown Gainesville, looking for our Venue, we had time to visit a few of the eateries and restaurants nearby. One of our favorites was Relish, a delicious, fresh burger place off of 2nd Street reminiscent of Five Guys. They offer homemade fries, every condiment you can think of and even a few you probably wouldn't. If you're in the mood for a juicy burger, this is the place to go.

We also rested our tired tushes at Vellos, a semi-'Fine Dining' restaurant attached to the Hampton Inn, accessible directly from the walkway outside. With no reservations needed, Vellos has a relaxed atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating. The food was so good, we ordered a third entree. If your looking for a light meal or for something more filling, Vellos has the seafood and steaks you might be searching for.

What's our very favorite place? Kristia and Andy would tell you not to pass up Harry's Seafood Bar and Grille, and Michael and I would have to agree. Absolutely amazing food. It's authentic Cajun style cuisine is worth every step of the brief walk (or drive) you might have from wherever you're staying. Only a few blocks from Sweetwater Inn and they have something for everyone. Plus, their Jambalaya is incredible!

And if you are worried about getting your daily caffeine fix, you're never too far away from a Starbucks when you're downtown!
